The Alliance of Independent Journalists' appeals to the international world on emergency supports for the victims of a multi-hit earthquakes that shook the city of Pariaman, Padang and nearby in West Sumatra, on September 30-October 1, 2009. The first quake, measuring 7,6 the Richter scale strucked the Indonesia's island of Sumatra, some 85 kilometers under the sea, north west of the city of Padang, at 17.16 P.M on September 30, 2009. The second quake, happened only few minutes later at 17.38 PM, measuring 6,2 the Richter scale. The third quake happened a day later closer to the city of Sungai Penuh, Jambi, the next province in the West Sumatra, about 225 kilometers south-east of Padang at a depth of about 25 kilometers. The first quake had caused widespread damage in and around the Padang city – the capital of the West Sumatra province – and beyond. At least 500 buildings has recorded to be fell down. According to the Associated Press, the Indonesian Government figures put the number of dead at 777, with nearly 2,100 people seriously injured. John Holmes, the U.N.'s humanitarian chief, set the death toll at 1,100, and the number is expected to grow. The Alliance of Independent Journalists, a journalists' association in Indonesia affiliated with the International Federation of Journalist (IFJ), have 21 members in the afflicted area. They are excluding dozens of other members that spread in the nation that comes from the area, and have direct families that supposedly directly affected by the tragedy. We are currently extending our networks to find more informations on them and their families. Very limited sources can be rely upon for electricity and communications are still down most of the time. We call in international journalists communities to help our colleagues in West Sumatra. The funds we are collecting will help them to cover for the emergency situations and other needs to get by, so they can soon be performing their duties as working journalists.
